JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (May 22, 2012) – Outdoor living is one of the most popular trends in home improvement, according to Jacksonville-based Sisler Johnston Interior Design.

“The top trends in home design and renovation are blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor living spaces,” said Judith Sisler Johnston, president of Sisler Johnston Interior Design and allied member, ASID.  “Homeowners today want their outdoor space to be an extension of their home and are taking steps to create an inviting area to relax, play and entertain guests.”

One of the newest interior design trends is including a series of sliding glass doors that roll away into a pocket to create an opening that unites the indoor and outdoor spaces.  Structure is also important in defining an outdoor space and creating a comfortable place in which to relax and entertain. While outdoor spaces can be open to the elements, coverage provides privacy and also makes it possible to use the space in less favorable weather conditions.

With the availability of sophisticated home products intended for outdoor use, outdoor spaces can be elegant, well-appointed and designed to suit every lifestyle. Currently, the most popular outdoor living features are light, fire, cooking, furnishings and accessories.

Lighting can make outdoor spaces come alive when the sun goes down. Outdoor lighting choices are available in a wide price range. In addition to simple string lighting, floor and table lamps are options as are chandeliers designed for outdoor use.  Lighting can showcase the home’s beautiful setting and amenities. Add an intimate wall lantern next to the patio door or eco-friendly LED garden and path lights to add a soft illumination to outdoor spaces.

An outdoor fireplace or fire pit is both stylish and useful, adding a cozy ambiance as well as comfortable warmth on chilly nights.  In the same way, ceiling and floor fans can provide cool relief when temperatures rise.

Outdoor kitchens continue to grow in popularity. Some cooks have found that they provide a great space to prepare certain foods, such as fried fish or lobster, which may leave a strong odor inside the home. The most sought-after appliance for outdoor spaces is the grill, with gas grills being the most popular. Stainless steel remains the material of choice for outdoor kitchen appliances and granite is the most popular choice for counter space.

Comfortable upscale furniture adds style and panache to outdoor spaces.  While beach-style chairs and umbrellas will always remain popular, many are choosing oversized seating with plush cushions in water resistant fabrics accompanied by weather-resistant end or accent tables.  Group pieces together to encourage comfort, conversation and a view of nature.  Home entertainment items are also popular to include in outdoor spaces including stereo systems and televisions.

Rugs, mats, outdoor pillows, candles and other accessories can make outdoor spaces come alive. Most outdoor rugs and floor coverings are designed with durable fabrics that are quick drying and easy to clean. Modular deck tiles are ideal for open-air areas such as decks, patios, swimming pools or spas. These tiles are relatively easy to install and remove.

The importance of good design and an emphasis on pre-planning is becoming increasingly significant with outdoor spaces as the available options, amenities and elements continue to grow. This is especially critical if the project is to be completed in stages. Careful planning avoids costly problems with utility lines or the need to rip out and re-do landscaping.

When planning or designing an outdoor living space, it is important to consider all of the furnishings and features the homeowner will want the space to accommodate now and in the future, so they can plan for technology needed for the area’s intended use.  This should include electrical capability, running cable lines and providing Internet access if desired.

It is wise to consult with a licensed interior designer before beginning any home design project, including do-it-yourself endeavors.  It can be a valuable investment to have an expert review the plan and provide recommendations.
